Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a type of restoration that act as replacement tooth roots. They’re small metal posts, usually made of titanium, that your Peninsula Dental Excellence provider carefully places into small incisions in your gumline.

Following your first surgery, you’ll let your mouth recover for 3-4 months. During this time, your bone grows around each implant, fusing it in place.

Once your implants heal, your provider attaches dental crowns, a bridge, or implant-supported dentures. Dental implants are sturdy and long-lasting. With proper care and good oral hygiene, they can last a lifetime.

Are there different types of dental implants?

At Peninsula Dental Excellence, you have several dental implant options to choose from, including:

Single-tooth dental implants

If you’re only missing one tooth, your provider might recommend a single-tooth dental implant. Single-tooth implants feature a small metal post that’s attached to a crown. The dental crown serves as a false tooth, allowing you to bite and chew. It blends in with your other teeth, ensuring no one but you and your dentist know you’ve had any work done.

Mini dental implants

Mini dental implants are similar to traditional implants, but the process for receiving them is minimally invasive. This means less pain, shorter surgery times, and less downtime. Mini dental implants can support crowns, bridges, or dentures. Because it’s minimally invasive, you can receive your dentures or crowns on the same day as your surgery.

Full-arch dentures

If you’re missing all of the teeth on your upper or lower arch, you might benefit from full-arch dentures. This type of implant can support a permanent dental bridge or implant-supported dentures. Unlike traditional dentures, full-arch dentures don’t require adhesives. They snap in place, allowing your false teeth to remain stable and secure.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Only a qualified dentist like those at Peninsula Dental Excellence can determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants. To help you make a determination, the providers offer free implant consultations.

During a consultation, your provider conducts a physical exam and reviews your oral health history. They also take oral X-rays to get a closer look at your jaw. If you have weak jaw volume or gum disease, you might require a bone graft or sinus lift before moving forward with treatment.
