Why Do I Need Cleanings

Every Six Months?

For routine cleanings and oral exams, a six-month interval is what is recommended by most dentists. There are a few reasons for this. First, seeing your dentist every six months allows them to keep a close eye on your oral health. Your dentist can note any areas of concern during your appointment, such as the early stages of gingivitis, recommend the proper steps to address the issue, and prevent further complications.

Getting a cleaning every six months keeps your smile healthy as well as bright and beautiful. We’ll buff and polish your teeth, which removes plaque, tartar, and some surface stains, keeping your teeth looking great. During your cleaning we’ll also be able to screen for other health issues, such as signs of oral cancer and diabetes.

What Happens

During a Routine Cleaning & Exam?

There are two parts to your appointment. First is the dental cleaning, or “prophylaxis.” One of our dental hygienists will perform the cleaning. First, your hygienist will check for signs of tooth decay or gum disease. Then, using a special scaling tool, they will remove plaque and tartar from between your teeth and gums.

Next, your teeth will be cleaned, buffed and polished with a special, high-powered brush and a gritty toothpaste. This helps remove even more plaque, and keeps your smile bright. Finally, your teeth will be flossed to remove any remaining debris and bacteria.

Once your dental cleaning is complete, your dentist will come visit you for your oral exam. Your hygienist will stay to discuss any potential issues that they may have found, and one of our doctors will examine your mouth to look for signs of gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues. At this point, x-rays may be recommended if the doctor thinks they’re necessary.

Once your dentist has completed the exam, they’ll discuss their findings with you, inform you about any oral health issues you may have, and suggest the follow-up treatments that you may need.

The Importance of Proper

At-Home Oral Care Habits

Going to the dentist every six months helps you keep your mouth healthy, but great oral health starts at home. Seeing the dentist regularly is no substitute for brushing twice per day for two minutes, or flossing once per day. You need to maintain proper oral care habits to ensure that your teeth remain strong and healthy. Need help developing a great oral routine? Just ask your doctor for tips during your next routine visit!
