Restorative Dentistry Q & A

What is restorative dentistry?

Restorative dentistry rehabilitates teeth damaged by tooth decay, gum disease, injury, or teeth grinding. If you lose or damage your teeth, it can lead to a variety of problems, including gum recession, nerve exposure, and misalignment.

Restorative dentistry prevents these and other issues from occurring. It also enables you to smile, bite, chew, and speak confidently. If you’re concerned about the condition of one or more teeth, restorative dentistry services provide a safe and effective means of taking action.

What are the different types of restorative dentistry?

Peninsula Dental Excellence offers a wide range of restorative dentistry services, including:

Tooth-colored fillings

A filling is a dental restoration used to treat minor tooth decay. Traditional fillings are made of amalgam, which is metallic in appearance. Tooth-colored fillings are made of composite resin and mimic the color and light-reflecting properties of your natural tooth enamel. They’re just as sturdy as traditional fillings, but they blend in with your teeth so no one will know you’ve had any work done.

Lab-made crowns

If you have more serious tooth decay or you damage a tooth, Peninsula Dental Excellence might recommend a lab-made crown. Crowns are tooth-shaped caps that restore your tooth to its near-original shape, size, and strength. The practice works closely with the best labs in Mountain View to build porcelain crowns that withstand the test of time. Receiving a lab-made crown usually takes 2-3 weeks.

CEREC same-day crowns

If you want to receive your crown on the same day as your initial consultation, Peninsula Dental Excellence also offers CEREC same-day crowns. The CEREC process uses a 3D scanner and computer-assisted design and manufacturing technology to plan and build a custom crown. To receive a CEREC same-day crown, your provider takes pictures and scans of your mouth. They upload these materials to a milling machine that crafts your custom crown in the office.

What type of restorative dentistry treatment is right for me?

Only qualified dentists like those at Peninsula Dental Excellence can determine the type of restorative dentistry that’s right for you.

Following a review of your oral health history, a discussion of your goals for treatment, and a thorough oral exam, your provider can make recommendations that align with your budget and schedule.
