Dental Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering used to protect a cracked, chipped, or decaying tooth from further damage. Once placed, a dental crown surrounds the entire portion of your tooth enamel that sits above the gumline.

What issues can dental crowns correct?

Dental crowns are versatile and can correct a wide range of common oral health problems. Peninsula Dental Excellence might recommend a crown to:

  • Protect a weak tooth
  • Restore a broken tooth
  • Cover a tooth with a large filling
  • Improve the appearance of stained or misshapen teeth
  • Cover a dental implant

Your provider might also recommend a dental crown to make a cosmetic modification.

What is the process of receiving a traditional dental crown?

Receiving a traditional dental crown usually takes two separate appointments. During your initial consultation, your provider conducts an oral exam and takes X-rays of your teeth. If you have an infected tooth or exposed tooth root, your provider might recommend a root canal before moving forward with treatment.

If your tooth is relatively healthy and there’s no infection, your provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums. Once the anesthesia sets in, your provider prepares your tooth to receive the crown, shaving off a thin layer of enamel on the top and sides.

Then, they take impressions of your tooth and send your impressions to a lab that manufactures your permanent crown.

A week or two later, your return to Peninsula Dental Excellence and your provider carefully bonds your permanent crown in place. You leave the office with a fully restored smile and a tooth that allows you to bite and chew confidently.

What are CEREC same-day crowns?

If you lead a busy lifestyle, Peninsula Dental Excellence also offers CEREC same-day crowns. Your provider creates CEREC crowns on-site using an advanced milling machine. This allows you to receive a new crown in one appointment instead of two or more spaced several weeks apart.

In addition to being quicker and more convenient, CEREC crowns are just as sturdy and long-lasting as traditional dental crowns.

How do I keep my dental crowns in great shape?

With proper care, dental crowns can last 10-15 years. To keep your dental crowns in great shape, make sure to brush and floss regularly, visit the dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and exam, and avoid bad habits like nail-biting or chewing on ice cubes.
