Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin pieces of porcelain that fit over the surface of your teeth to enhance their appearance. They can cover imperfections and damage while changing the shape and color of your teeth. Many people use veneers to create a Hollywood smile that looks straight, white, and uniform.

What are the benefits of veneers?

Veneers are minimally invasive and versatile. They can completely transform your teeth in as few as two visits. Peninsula Dental Excellence uses veneers to correct several different dental problems, including:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Gaps in your smile
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Teeth worn down by grinding

Once placed, veneers look, feel, and function exactly like your natural teeth. They require no special care other than regular brushing, flossing, and routine teeth cleanings. When cared for properly, these durable stain-resistant shells can last longer than 15 years.

What is the process for getting veneers?

It typically takes two visits to prepare your teeth and place your new veneers. At the first appointment, Peninsula Dental Excellence prepares your teeth to make room for the veneers by removing a small portion of your enamel. This helps ensure that your veneers look as natural as the rest of your teeth.

Next, your provider takes impressions of your teeth to help create your new veneers out of porcelain. Veneers take 2-3 weeks to create, so you’ll wear a set of temporary veneers in the meantime.

When you return for your final visit, your provider removes the temporary veneers before cleaning and etching your teeth. This creates a surface that the veneers can bond to so they’re as secure as possible.

Finally, your provider at Peninsula Dental Excellence sets the veneers and adjusts them, trimming any excess material, before cementing them in place. Before you leave the office, your provider polishes your veneers for a natural look.

How do I care for my veneers?

Because veneers function just like your natural teeth, you can chew your favorite foods and speak as you normally would. To keep your veneers strong and durable, visit the office for regular preventive visits.
